Honorable Mention
Remains
Silvia A. Brandon-Perez

The neighborhood had once
been comfortable, the houses
had long porches, many stories, full
basements, yards that had once housed

zinnias, the odd carnation, roses
with their thorns. I walked past
painted teenagers with their gum
to the beat of the latest hip hop,

the giggle of the girls as the wreck
of a once firm female with a full
basement, tulips, the odd red rose
in memory, an unpainted hull

of an old house.
